Deleted Shopify products: choose the right redirect.

A practical guide to manual 301 redirects, Shopify Flow and automatic handling with Product 404 Redirects, including a checklist for your store.

Start with the product’s status

A product that will be restocked usually does not need a new URL. Keep the active page, explain availability and give the customer a way to return. When a product is permanently removed, first decide what someone following the old link should find.

A direct replacement is often more precise than a broad collection. A relevant collection can work when there is no single successor. If no page helps with the same need, a useful 404 page is a legitimate outcome.

Three ways to create redirects

OptionSuitable forWhat you maintain
Shopify URL redirectsOccasional deletions and individually chosen targets.Create and review each rule.
Shopify FlowRecurring events with rules your team can define. The workflow, available data and failures.
Product 404 RedirectsAutomatic product-to-collection redirects on deletion. The subscription and destination checks.

Create a manual rule

Shopify includes a URL redirect tool. Open URL redirects from the administration’s content and menus, then create a rule with the old path and a relevant target. An illustrative example is /products/old-mug to /collections/mugs.

The source must be a broken URL before the redirect can take effect. Save the rule and verify it as a signed-out visitor. Use Shopify’s current instructions for the menu location and restrictions.

When does Shopify Flow make sense?

Flow provides a Create redirect URL action that takes a source and a destination. A workflow can fit a repeatable deletion process when the required information is available in the event or has been stored beforehand.

Decide how the target is selected and how existing rules are handled. A deletion event alone does not establish that all previous collection data is available to your workflow. Validate your actual data in a test environment before automating changes to the real catalogue.

When does the app make sense?

Product 404 Redirects is my app for automatically creating Shopify’s native redirects when products are deleted. It fits stores where product-to-collection routing is a useful default. The product page includes actual screenshots, pricing and setup information.

Review destinations and old rules. A subscription does not make an unrelated target useful, and historical URLs without available product data need separate assessment.

Test before changing the catalogue

  • Record the source URLs and intended destinations.
  • Use a product created for testing; do not delete a real item just to try the setup.
  • Check that the old URL returns a permanent redirect and the destination responds with 200.
  • Test the main domain and relevant language and market variants.
  • Check an active product URL and an unknown URL so broad rules do not capture them.
  • Update internal links to the destination and monitor the relevant URLs in Search Console.

This is a documentation-based workflow with illustrative examples. It has not been tested inside your Shopify store.
